Lower and Middle River Des Peres Control Systems

M3 Engineering, as a subconsultant to Jacobs Engineering, is modeling enclosed systems within the River Des Peres Watershed in St. Louis using XP-SWMM. This effort is part of MSD's Long Term Control Plan to eliminate combined sewer (storm and sanitary flow) overflows to the River Des Peres during wet weather events by using deep tunnel storage or storage within the enclosed system itself. Within the first two years of the project, M3 has modeled 6 subwatersheds that included piping up to 54" in diameter. M3 also studied the possibility of storing wet weather flow in the existing 29-ft horseshoe sewers (tubes) upstream of the open channel as a supplement to the storage in the planned River Des Peres tunnel. A minimum of 25 million gallons of level pool storage is desired and was studied using a slide gate, a hinged crest gate and an inflatable dam. Potential locations of the gates/dams included inside the tubes, as well as downstream, within the open channel.
